Laurie Ruhnke | The Tierra Verde Women’s Club began as a Social Club, an avenue to meet our neighbors and find new friends in our community. The first meetings began in 1988 when Barbara Zaccaria, with a few neighbors, gathered a group of ladies, who called themselves the “Tierra Verde Women’s Club.” An article in the Island Reporter concerning a November meeting states “Twenty-four members and guests attended." The Afternoon Bridge and Gourmet group leaders spoke of upcoming plans, and an invitation was extended, “Prospective members are always welcome.” Thus, the spirit of the TVWC was begun. The club grew slowly, limited by meeting in members' homes. In ten years, they were seeking community rooms and facilities to hold their growing numbers. In 1998 the Installation of Officers was held at Billy’s with 45 members attending. Gwen Kearley began producing the Calendar and a Newsletter that was mailed to all members. In 2000, Interest groups included: Lunch Bunch, Book Club, Adventure Tours, Bunco, Investment club, Dining IN, Dining OUT, Movie group, Cards, Movers & Shakers. Two parties were planned “by popular demand,” a Christmas Party and a Square Dance! Annual dues were still $20.00. By 2004, we had almost 100 members, and new interest groups numbering more than 20! We met at Isla Del Sol Country Club, and explored every avenue to accommodate our growing membership. A website was started for the TVWC by Libby Salamone. The Calendar and Newsletter were sent by e-mail and thus the TVWC joined the 21st century! By the end of 2005 we had over 150 members and 25 plus Interest Groups! Laurie Ruhnke was appointed as Historian/photographer and she made the first scrapbook to present to the out-going President. She made 2 more scrapbooks, all treasures of our history. President in 2008, Laurie was re-elected for a second term in 2009, a first in TVWC history. With the 2014-2015 season, we enter into our 26th year as a Club with well over 200 members & friends! Interest Groups keep members busy and enjoying life on Tierra Verde. Our Interest Groups include: Yoga, Bridge, Games, Cards, Mahjong, Crafts, Lunch groups, Bunco groups, Dining groups, Travel, Book Clubs, French, Movies, and more ideas keep flowing! We have opened our homes, helped our friends & new acquaintances alike, we even published a book “Journey to Paradise” with stories written by members about how they came to live in Tierra Verde! In the 2018-2019 season, our club celebrated its 30th Anniversary. Today, we have grown to nearly 300 members, we have over 60 Interest Groups and over 60 Interest Group Leaders. Welcoming new members and new ideas has kept the TVWC diverse and dynamic! We all feel that our lives have been enriched by meeting new friends and wonder what we would have done without joining this incredible club! |
